The more I think about it, the more it dawns on me that Vincent might, at some point, expected to be saved from Hojo and company. The turks, led by Veld, most likely. I think for a while he might've had hope, but then as time passed he realized no-one was coming. Why would they risk their careers or even their lives for him? Maybe he was fooling himself into believing he was worthy of that much.

He had no family, no father, perhaps no mother either, who would even miss him? Veld? His comrades? They would have easily believed whatever story Hojo had made up surely, pronouncing him dead while doing his job, honoring his oath as a Turk...In the end he did die, didn't he? How could he believe himself to be the same Vincent Valentine, after all that had been done to him after he had failed to save her? Maybe he deserved the agonizing pain, the hopelessness and despair that threatened to tear away what was left of his heart, every single tear he had cried...That was his penance.

Maybe Vincent Valentine fell asleep inside that coffin hoping no-one would ever come looking for him, that way they would never have to see the monster he had become.

I'M I IDK. Aaalso GLADLY they didn't put love of my life at the end or I really would have broke down crying.
